Cole Palmer has been in sensational form for Chelsea this season

Chelsea cult hero Pat Nevin believes the idea of joining Manchester United will always retain an appeal for Cole Palmer.

The England international is enjoying another stellar season for the Blues and is now firmly established as one of the Premier League’s best players.

Despite growing up in Manchester City’s academy, the 22-year-old was a boyhood Red Devils fan.

United’s malaise, allied to the fact Palmer signed a bumper long-term contract, means there is little chance of him pushing for a move to Ruben Amorim’s side any time soon, but Nevin believes that ambition to play for the team he supported as a boy will always be there.

‘Cole Palmer’s support for Manchester United is gone,’ Nevin told Grosvenor Sport.

‘It really has gone. Maybe some part of him might want to go there at the end of his career but that really won’t be in his mind.

‘There’s no way he’d want to leave a vibrant young team like Chelsea for the current Manchester United, despite their good performance against Liverpool.

‘That move would be years and years away from even being considered and if Chelsea fans get worried they just need to look at his contract length.’

‘Cole Palmer is worth well in excess of £100million, that is an absolute given,’ Nevin added when asked to assess Palmer’s market value.

‘Having said that, the market has changed from English clubs being able to throw money at players without worrying too much about consequences, look at Everton and Newcastle who are having to be careful at the moment.

‘But Cole Palmer is one player who will still be seen as worth taking the risk on and I think there will be attempts to sign him from Chelsea.

‘If Barcelona were in the right position then they would be in for him and I suspect Real Madrid would be the same because if I had to pick between Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer, I’d pick Palmer.

‘I said that before Euro 2024 and it raised a lot of eyebrows, but Palmer is genius levels.

‘He doesn’t sell himself big but he is posting numbers like Kevin De Bruyne used to and like Mohamed Salah does – but they didn’t at his age.

‘He is very special and worth £100million – and the rest on top.’
