[The published fired this review copy my way – I almost dodged it, but I just could not help myself…]
The Bullet series still has plenty of surprises in store! After the fantastic Bullet♥︎, Bullet★ has now arrived on my shooting range, along with two expansions. Meanwhile, the Bullet Cubed campaign is in full swing, bringing even more expansions and a fantastic storage box to hold all your Bullets. So, what explosive surprises does Bullet★ have in store?
A Bullet-riddled Bag
Bullet Star—or Bullet★—is a fast-paced, almost dexterity-based, real-time game built around a bag-building mechanic. However, this system has a unique twist: instead of filling your bag with useful resources, your goal is to keep it as empty as possible.
Every token placed in your bag will, sooner rather than later, end up on your main player board. Your objective? To clear it quickly and efficiently. In each three-minute round, you'll be drawing and placing colorful bullets in front of you. These bullets gradually build up, creating a threat that must be eliminated using Patterns. Once you remove bullets from your board… you send them to your opponent, making them their problem in the next round!
To help you survive, you'll have several support actions—such as moving bullets, drawing new Patterns, and swapping bullets on your board. Plus, each of the eight heroines comes with unique and highly asymmetric powers, adding even more variety to the gameplay.
A fierce firefight is about to break out.
But we’re ready for it.
A Bullet Wound in Four Flavors
In Bullet Star, you have four game modes to choose from, including team play, co-op, and solo mode. And if you combine Bullet Star with Bullet Heart, you can play with up to eight players! However, the true joy of the game comes from its default competitive mode, where you constantly throw obstacles at your opponents.
The rules for Bullet Star fit on just three pages. The descriptions of each heroine's abilities rarely go beyond three sentences. And each round lasts only three minutes. But despite this simplicity, the game is packed with variety, challenges, and replayability! Every character plays noticeably differently, even if their ability seems trivial at first—like rotating Patterns freely or changing colors on their board’s tracks.
These heroines are Bullet Star’s secret weapon. Not only do they teach players to react quickly, but they also enhance spatial awareness. And, much like children growing into adolescence, players gradually start seeing beyond mere rows and columns, recognizing patterns, clusters, sections, and negative space.
A constantly shrinking negative space.
Under a Barrage of Colors
It’s hard not to think of the legendary Tetris while playing, as Bullet★ evokes that classic "Tetris fever".
At first, the game feels slow and stress-free—there’s plenty of space, so you pull several tokens without much thought. The Patterns often require specific combinations, which are difficult to form early on. So, you keep drawing… until suddenly, you start sweating. Space shrinks rapidly, and before you know it, you're racing against the clock, frantically shifting, swapping, and pulling off last-minute tricks to survive.
This frenetic pace, combined with tight spaces and a ticking clock, is the essence of Bullet★. From my experience, people either love it or don’t—its unique style, unusual gameplay, and pressure-filled mechanics aren’t for everyone.
But if you already love Bullet, then I’ve got two boxes for you that will unlock even more dimensions of this incredible game!
Give Me a Paw!
Ready to scratch, jump, and… meow? Then sharpen your claws—here comes Bullet Paw!
This expansion introduces four new feline-inspired heroines, each bringing unique abilities, new mechanics, Patterns to use, and strategies to explore! It’s a perfect example of how expansions don’t need to change the core rules to keep things exciting. While Bullet Paw is mechanically the same as the base game (and works with any version), it still packs plenty of fresh content—like a juicy bite of tuna, filled with cat-themed quirks and humorous details that enhance the game's playful tone.
Musical kitty Beethoven can use a Pattern once per round while ignoring its usual requirements. Another feline warrior, with a sword-tipped tail, can remove discarded or used Pattern cards to trigger powerful special actions. The tiny Shadow Puppet has a unique deck of "moods", which shift dynamically, giving her changing abilities throughout the game.
A Bullet in New Colors
In Bullet: Palette, it's not about animals this time—it’s all about artistic expression. The theme explores different forms of art, and the four new heroines—"artists" in their own right—bring even more innovation than Bullet Paw did. Alongside these new characters, the box includes a six-sided die and several new tokens.
Take Precursor Die, a cube-shaped heroine whose die roll before each round determines certain actions and Pattern effects. Then there’s Bridget Glenn, who introduces her own five-color palette. During the game, she swaps track markings on her board, strategically redirecting incoming bullets. Is your yellow track too crowded? Simply turn it into a blue track and shift the danger elsewhere! Meanwhile, Shout’s Pattern deck focuses not on formations but on the number of bullets in each column. And that's just a sample of what Palette offers.
Both expansions add new depth to the game without overwhelming players with additional rules. Everything you need to know is summarized on character boards. Expect new strategies, fresh interactions, and clever maneuvers at every turn. The unique artistic styles further enhance the game’s already vibrant aesthetic. While there are no groundbreaking additions—no extra boards, new game modes, or, let’s say, velvet pouches for cat treats—fans of the series will find exactly what they love.
All the Colors of the Rainbow
The variety of game modes, unique characters, and short, 30-minute sessions in Bullet Star make it easy to play multiple times in a row. The deluxe wooden tokens not only look fantastic but also feel great to handle.
The game's bold, intense illustrations and equally intense timers—three-minute countdown clips available on YouTube—add to the arcade-like atmosphere inspired by arcade gaming machines. The overwhelming visual and auditory stimuli also create a sense of urgency, pushing players to work quickly and efficiently before time runs out. If the round ends with bullets still in the bag, they’re immediately placed on the board, without any chance to remove or reposition them. This fast-paced, three-minute gameplay loop keeps tension high, delivers strong emotions, and deeply engages players.
Bullet Star requires some practice to master, which can make the first few rounds frustrating. The randomness of the bag and Patterns can further amplify this feeling. The player interaction is also quite distinct: while you send bullets to your opponents and compete for upgrades, the real-time nature means you're mostly focused on your own board for those crucial three minutes.
Trying to strategically send bullets to a specific opponent isn’t always practical, as you rarely have enough control over their placement. Instead, the game challenges you to manage your own board efficiently—and simply hope that your rivals struggle under the pressure.
Hit Me with Your Best Shot… Again!
Staying on the topic of Tetris—ironically, despite all the big-box, miniatures-heavy board game adaptations of video games, it's actually the Bullet series that gives me the experience closest to actual, arcade-style gaming. This game is consumed quickly, almost greedily. You step in, setup your three boards and you're ready to go. The large roster of heroines keeps it fresh, while the additional modes let you challenge each character as an evil boss, just as quirky and unique as the character itself. Each heroine and creature in the game has a small story to tell—whether it’s about the news, zombies, or controlling fireworks—adding a subtle yet flavorful touch to the mechanics.
The mix of push-your-luck elements and high-octane time pressure might be divisive for some players, but to me, it makes perfect sense as a combination of two thrilling mechanics. Making quick decisions under a ticking clock isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but for my ADHD brain, this kind of mental gymnastics is exhilarating. Each round packs more emotions and tough choices than many longer, slower-paced games. The ever-changing, fast-paced gameplay keeps me coming back for more, so it’s no surprise that "more Bullet" is always the best solution for me.
I encourage you to reach into this bag and see for yourself how these slightly oriental bullets suit your taste.
The Bullet Cubed campaign, the newest addition to the series, is currently live on Gamefound. It was funded in just 17 minutes!
Pros:
+ Intoxicatingly fast-paced mix of push-your-luck and real-time gameplay
+ Huge variety of characters, bosses, and unique abilities/mechanics
+ Simple rules and short, dynamic bouts
Cons:
– The intense gameplay and equally intense visual/audio design (timers) might not be for everyone
– The first few games can be frustrating for impatient players, especially due to built-in randomness
– No proper box insert for organizing components
